SENTENCE IN R. v. ANSARI
BRAMPTON, Ontario – October 4th, 2010 – Asad Ansari, 25, was sentenced today in Ontario Superior Court to 6 ½ years in prison for his role in a terrorist plot.
On June 23, 2010, a jury found him guilty of participating in the activities of a terrorist group, contrary to s. 83.18(1) of the Criminal Code.
Asad Ansari spent three years and three months in pre-trial custody. Given the court practice of granting additional credit for time served, he has already completed his sentence. He remains on probation for three years.
The PPSC is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest. The PPSC is also responsible for providing prosecution-related advice to law enforcement agencies across Canada.
